Promotion of sustainable wastewater management in Belarus

CCB works with ten partner organisations in Belarus to implement the project NGO Water Strategies in Belarus and Strengthening of the Civil Society. The project aims to promote sustainable water managementpolicies and practices in Belarus that contribute to good surface and ground water quality, preserved biodiversity and a better quality of life for the people.

One of the priority areas for the project is to help reduce eutrophication and water pollution through improved water management practices and efficient monitoring of water quality. In the area of sanitation, the project supports regular public monitoring of water quality and environmental hot spots in water protection zones by the River Watch program, with special attention paid testing the levels of nitrate in wells in rural areas. The results of the public monitoring are published online, and identified problems are followed up in cooperation with the relevant authorities.

In terms of practical sulutions, project partners are dissemination information and providing advice on eco-sanitation solutions through conferences, workshops, round tables and other events. In 2013, a study visit on eco-sanitation in Poland was organised in collaboration with the Polish Ecological Club, which is also a CCB partner. Project partners are also developing and implementing eco-sanitation pilots in different regions of Belarus.
