Thanks again to everyone who helped us by responding to our mammal quiz. We had 488 responses between 12 August and 1 October 2020. The main conclusion, which is very clear, is that most people were unable to accurately identify the harbour porpoise. Meanwhile, recognition of a number of other mammals, including non-European ones, was much higher and roughly similar for many of the species.

The figure shows the accuracy of species recognition by respondents for each species. It is evident that the pattern is quite different for the harbour porpoise with much lower degree of correct naming of the species than for other species.
