Funding Future Conference 2024
The Baltic Sea Conservation Foundation (BaltCF) is a private civil law foundation registered in Germany and governed exclusively by environmental conservation NGOs. We pursue independently and transparently the objectives set in our statute: the conservation of nature and protection of the environment in the Baltic Sea and its catchment area.

Description

The Future Funding Conference 2024 fostered collaboration between funders for better environmental projects in the Baltic Sea Region on 10-11 September 2024 in Gdańsk, Poland.

The conference gathered funders and recipients of funding who contribute to marine conservation – be it by removing ghost gear from the seafloor or by restoring rivers far inland – and whose area of activity currently or potentially includes the Baltic Sea catchment. The event focused on how we can tackle the above-mentioned and other issues and improve the funding of environmental projects together to enable more effective protection of marine ecosystems in general, and the Baltic Sea in particular.

The event:
- presented a concept for a funders’ network and a collaboration platform;
- collected stakeholder feedback for the network concept and the platform to improve both;
- conducted open discussions about the problems both sides face to raise awareness and understanding;
- provided an opportunity for NGOs to pitch projects in need of funding.

CCB participants in the meeting
- Mikhail Durkin, CCB Executive Secretary
- Janis Matulis, Latvian Green Movement

The participants' list is not available for this meeting.

Outcomes of the conference
1) Identified problems and solutions: We have gathered the contributions from the first workshop on Tuesday and our Lego session on Wednesday, and documented them in the form of mind maps with identified problems (first level) and solutions (second level). We have made three mind maps based on the three levels we used for the Lego workshop (Individual/project, organisational, and policy). These mind maps document what was discussed in the workshops and will serve as a base for further talks with other funders.

2) We have made a Google Map with NGOs and funding organisations relevant for Baltic Sea conservation. This is a work in progress. We have included relevant funders we currently know of, provided they have some sort of application process for funding, as well as the NGOs that were present at the conference, provided they have a website and an address. We’ll expand this map as we gather more knowledge. Feel free to share and to request editing access if you want to contribute!

3) We have tried to distill the contributions to the “Manifesto” workshop into four suggestions for values, one for each dimension. You can find the dedicated Miro board here. This is something we consider a very first step, and we will refine this first draft in the time to come, and also add a set of funding principles that goes along with it. For now, feel free to have a look. If you want to leave any suggestions, feel free to request editing access (Miro won’t let us give editing access with just the public link). Moreover, for reference you can have a look at the Agile Manifesto and the 12 Principles behind it – this is where we took the idea from.
