Description

MARLICE is an international forum on marine litter and the circular economy that has been taking place since 2019. It is a meeting point for stakeholders interested in the issue of marine litter to share knowledge and experience and find solutions. The event took place in Valencia, Spain on April 23, 2024.

CCB Participants in the event:
- Natalia Cholovska, Ecoterra and CCB Council Member
- Iryna Myronova, Zero Waste Lviv

Outcomes of the event:
At the event, participants from different countries and institutions presented their work, approaches, and methodologies applied to quantify the riverine litter and to assess how much of it contributes to marine pollution. The final discussion was devoted to how to proceed with the development of unified and standardized methodologies to have reliable and comparable data. Most speakers concluded that riverine litter harms both river and marine ecosystems, however, the amount of litter that reaches the marine is smaller than it was considered before since much of it rests on the banks of rivers and is covered by vegetation. The extreme weather events are among the major drivers that bring litter into the rivers. An investigative approach is needed to address the primary causes of why litter and waste end up in the rivers with rainwater or sewage. The event helped to better understand the relationship between Zero Waste Lviv's work and the prevention of riverine litter.
