MARLICE forum
MARLICE is an international forum on marine litter and circular economy that has been taking place since 2019. It is a meeting point for stakeholders interested in the issue of marine litter to share knowledge and experience and find solutions.

It is organized by the Spanish Marine Litter Association (AEBAM), which aims to create an efficient associative framework that contributes to prevent and reduce the amount and impact of waste reaching the marine environment.

Description

MARLICE Forum “Enhancing Interregional Cooperation Towards Addressing Riverine Input of Marine Litter” in Valencia, Spain, 22-24 May 2024, attended by four Regional Sea Conventions surrounding Europe (Black Sea / Bucharest Convention, Baltic Sea / HELCOM, North Atlantic / OSPAR and UNEP/MAP Barcelona Convention), the EU, UNEP Source to Sea Pollution Unit and on behalf of CCB attended by representatives of Ukrainian MOs Ecoterra and Zero Waste Lviv, sharing their knowledge on riverine litter prevention

CCB Participants and partners in the event:
- Natalia Cholovska, Ecoterra and CCB Council Member
- Iryna Myronova, Zero Waste Lviv
- Nataliya Kruta, Basin Department of Water Resources of Zakhidnyi Buh and Sian rivers, Lviv, Ukraine
- Liliia Grychulevych, NGO Black Sea Women's Club

Outcomes of the event:
At the event, participants from different countries and institutions presented their work, approaches, and methodologies applied to quantify the riverine litter and to assess how much of it contributes to marine pollution. The final discussion was devoted to how to proceed with the development of unified and standardized methodologies to have reliable and comparable data. Most speakers concluded that riverine litter harms both river and marine ecosystems, however, the amount of litter that reaches the marine is smaller than it was considered before since much of it rests on the banks of rivers and is covered by vegetation. The extreme weather events are among the major drivers that bring litter into the rivers. An investigative approach is needed to address the primary causes of why litter and waste end up in the rivers with rainwater or sewage. The event helped to better understand the relationship between Zero Waste Lviv's work and the prevention of riverine litter.
