On Monday 25 November 13:00-14:00 CET was the Online media briefing on the setting of European fishing opportunities for 2025.
This Autumn, European countries decided on fishing opportunities for 2025 in the Northeast Atlantic, the North Sea, and the Mediterranean and Black Seas. Overfishing remains rampant in these waters, despite European & UK legislation in place to prevent it. To this end, several court cases were ongoing against the Council of the EU and the UK government to prevent further mismanagement of fisheries. Countries must better implement the law and adopt a truly ecosystem-based approach. This should also be the first year the new European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, currently Commissioner-designate Costas Kadis, takes part in these critical decisions, testing his resolve to follow scientific advice and EU law.
