What is HELCOM? The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission – also known as the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) – is an intergovernmental organization (IGO) and a regional sea convention in the Baltic Sea area. HELCOM was established about four decades ago to protect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea from all sources of pollution through intergovernmental cooperation. The HELCOM Secretariat is located in Helsinki, Finland. To know more about it.

Description

The Baltic Stakeholder Conference 2022 - Climate Change in the Baltic Sea (BSC2022) was held online on 26-27 September 2022. The stakeholder conference had to be postponed from 9-10 March 2022 due to the political situation and the following strategic pause of HELCOM.

Centred around the theme of climate change in the Baltic Sea, the BSC2022 facilitated a lively discussion among stakeholders about HELCOM's work on the protection of the Baltic Sea in the context of a changing climate.

The effects of climate change are already evident in the Baltic Sea. However, they are often not easy to understand and can be difficult to distinguish from other anthropogenic pressures. There is a large variation between different regions in the Baltic Sea, ruling out simple management solutions.

One key purpose of the Conference was to present the key outtakes of the Climate Change in the Baltic Sea Fact Sheet, as well as present the outcomes of the HELCOM Blue Carbon Workshop. Moreover, the 1-hour panel was organized to particularly stimulate and gather views on climate change mitigation and adaptation from policymakers, the research community and other stakeholders in the Baltic Sea region.

The Conference was moderated by Jannica Haldin, Deputy Executive Secretary of HELCOM.

CCB's Program Manager, Federica Pastore CCB Communication officer, Nils Hoglund CCB Fisheries officer and Camille Fraizy CCB International Coordinator took part in the meeting.
Day 1 (26 September 2022): Webinar about climate change in the Baltic Sea (open to all)
Day 2 (27 September 2022): Workshop on the science, policy and management aspects of climate change (by invitation only)

The outcomes, including the recording and the summaries of the workshop.
Some key out-takes of the Conference are available at HELCOM website.

The participants list is not available for this event.

The BSC2022 was organised by the German Environment Agency (UBA) and the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) in conjunction with Baltic Earth.
