Baltic Climate School

2024 - ongoing

The Baltic Climate School is an educational course on climate change
that unites bloggers, journalists, and content creators around the Baltic Sea. The event offers meetings with experts, visits to protected areas and reflective moments that inspire the creation of content about the Baltic Sea challenges and solutions.

HISTORY OF THE PROJECT

The Baltic Sea Region is experiencing a changing climate. The pace of change is rapid. In terms of warming, the Baltic Sea is far outpacing the oceans. The water is getting 0.6 degrees warmer each decade, a rate of warming three times higher than in the oceans. The Baltic Sea is also one of their most studied regions. This is making the Baltic Sea a test case for our Planet Earth.

By studying the Baltic Sea, we can get an idea of what changes will take place in the world. Like other regions in Europe, the Baltic faces one of the highest rates of increase in land temperature. The impacts of climate change on the region are numerous and vary depending on the specific geographical location, economic sector, or community.

The initiative of this project started in 2021 under the "Coastal University". This event was the first CCB course dedicated to sharing knowledge and expertise about the Baltic Sea coasts. In 2023, the event shiffted to "Baltic Ocean Literacy School" and focused on ocean literacy raising awareness and knowledge about how the ocean's influence on people and how people influence on the ocean.

In 2024 the project is renamed Baltic Climate School and is dedicated to the impact of climate change on the coasts of the Baltic Sea. This educational course unites bloggers, journalists, and content creators around the Baltic Sea. The event offers meetings with experts, visits to protected areas and reflective moments that inspire the creation of content about the Baltic Sea challenges and solutions.

Baltic Climate School IN A NUTSHELL

Why do we organize this course?

  • To raise awareness about the impact of climate change in the Baltic Sea Region;
  • To give a voice to local communities and grassroots initiatives at the international level;
  • To convey relevant scientific information about climate change to a wide range of the public in an accessible and environmentally friendly way.
  • To create a pool of media experts, journalists and activists around CCB activities to raise awareness of the anthropogenic maritime activities in the Baltic marine ecosystems and to address the negative effects over a long-term perspective.

How the course is implemented?

The course consists of meetings with experts, visits to protected areas and reflective moments that inspire the creation of intelligent and professional content about the Baltic Sea challenges and solutions.

The participants meet local communities, have interviews, and hear stories of grassroots initiatives.

What are the impacts?

Participants will get from the event:
