The workshop on “Extreme weather events and their impact on nutrient leakage from rural areas” was on 04 December 2023 at 13:00-16:30 EET.
The event was organised by PA Nutri and PA Bioeconomy/EUSBSR, and Coalition Clean Baltic.
More informationImpacts of climate change are already evident in the Baltic Sea Region. Droughts and floods are becoming increasingly more common, and they might be influencing farming practices and nutrient leakages. HELCOM
Policy Brief on integrated rural water management is addressing these issues and offers guidance to implementation of 2021 Baltic Sea Action Plan’s Action E19 (to be implemented nationally by the countries): “Apply innovative water management measures where appropriate, for example, lime filter ditches, sediment traps and controlled drainage, and nature-based solutions, such as two-level ditches and constructed wetlands, when upgrading and renovating agricultural drainage systems.”
The first event was aimed at a small group of stakeholders from around the Baltic Sea Region. The aim of the workshop was to discuss different perspectives of water management (farmers, cities, measures, river management), to scope priority topics and themes for follow-up events.
The overall aim of the whole chain of events was to form a dialogue process of sharing good practices about innovative water management measures and stakeholder engagement and how to start the progress towards integrated water management, also supporting countries to implement the 2021 BSAP Action E19.
