On 2-3 December 2024 was held the Workshop in Uppsala, Sweden within the project "Introducing sustainable sanitation systems in rural Lviv municipality, Ukraine" which is carried out together with Lviv City Institute, Zero Waste Lviv, Polish Ecological Club and Coalition Clean Baltic, and is financed by the Swedish Institute.
Two further digital workshops will be held within the project in 2025 to work out and agree on a criteria list, which places to include in the project and which techniques are suitable for the selected locations. The possibility of obtaining additional funding to proceed to concrete measures is also being investigated.
About the projectIn this project, we develop proposals for sustainable sewage solutions in rural Lviv using the planning method Open Water and Wastewater Planning together with project partners from Ukraine, Poland and Sweden. The results of the project will be presented in a report that will serve as an example collection of possible sewage solutions for rural villages in other places in Ukraine, as well as in Poland and in Sweden.

OutcomesThe participants discussed the potential sites in Ukraine for future implementation of sustainable sanitation solutions as well as the following points:
- What is sustainable sanitation (resource management, environmental impact, reuse of nutrients etc.)
- Important factors for sustainable sanitation systems in Ukraine
- Ukrainian laws and regulations regarding wastewater management
- EU water legislation
- EU sanitation legislation
