What is ASCOBANS? ASCOBANS was concluded in 1991 as the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas (ASCOBANS) under the auspices of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS or Bonn Convention) and entered into force in 1994. To know more about it.

Description

The 9th Meeting of the Parties to ASCOBANS took place online, from 7 to 11 September 2020.

At the meeting, along with discussions surrounding strategic and institutional subjects, ASCOBANS Parties considered resolutions on current conservation challenges. These include marine debris, resource depletion, stranding response, underwater noise, and bycatch.

Many of these same dangers threaten species the world over, in every ocean. By addressing such threats, concerted action agreed by ASCOBANS Parties at the meeting would not only reduce their impacts on species in the ASCOBANS area but also help raise awareness and contribute to a global response needed to tackle these pressing issues affecting all life in our oceans.

Ida Carlén, CCB Biodiversity and Nature Conservation Officer, attended the meeting.
