Impacts of continuous underwater noise on fish in the Baltic Sea
Coalition Clean Baltic (CCB) and The Fisheries Secretariat (FishSec) under the frame of the project "Red Noise Baltship".

Beskrivning

The webinar and panel discussion "Impacts of continuous underwater noise on fish in the Baltic Sea" took place online on 19th November 2024 (14:00-16:30 CET). It was organized by Coalition Clean Baltic (CCB) and The Fisheries Secretariat (FishSec) under the frame of the project "Red Noise Baltship".

The webinar narrowed down the wide global problem of underwater noise to focus on how this pressure potentially impacts fish in the Baltic Sea. It was aimed at a broad audience, from NGOs and research institutions to anglers and commercial fishermen.

Main outcomes
1. There are two ways forward to address continuous underwater noise: the way assessments are done and the measures that can be applied.
2. Relevant measures that can already be applied: no enter zones, operational measures (e.g. speed restrictions) and technological improvements.
2. Underwater noise is an issue that can be easily solved: when you switch it off, it disappears.
3. It´s important to raise awareness in boating communities about this issue and the technological solutions available.
4. Standardization of data and how to connect research studies are relevant factors for wider reporting.

Presentations
- "Overview of impacts of underwater noise on fish and invertebrates from shipping and recreational boats" Anna-Sara Krång, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Sweden
