Youth Restoration Camp
Student Naturalists Scientific Society is a youth organization based at the Vilnius University Life Sciences Center. The organization seeks to raise awareness about wildlife and how to preserve it.

Beskrivning

From October 11 to 13, 2024, was held the Youth Restoration Camp 2024 in the Curonian Spit National Park, Lithuania to promote conservation awareness and improve environmental skills through hands-on activities and educational sessions.

This event was organised in the frame of CCB Youth Group as a follow-up outcome of the Our Common Baltic Course 2024. CCB supported the organisation of the restoration camp. A manual on how to organise youth restoration camps is under development. The document will be translated into different languages.

CCB aims to replicate in the future, the youth restoration camp in other countries of the Baltic Sea countries.

Programme description and overview of the restoration camp
The first day of the expedition was in the Lithuanian Sea Museum complex located in Kopgalis and the Fisheries and Aquaculture Laboratory of Klaipėda University’s Marine Research Institute. The head of the Institute, Nerijus Nika, showed the participants, the institute's educational and scientific spaces and shared insights about the most current Baltic Sea research and future prospects. During the visit to the Baltic Sea Animal Rehabilitation Center, participants learned about the rehabilitation and release of Baltic grey seals, as well as the challenges and rewards faced by the specialists caring for these animals.

On Saturday the participants volunteered at the Nagliai Reserve. In this reserve, as in the rest of the Curonian Spit, the invasive Scotch broom has spread widely, overshadowing native plants and harming the dune and dry pine forest habitats. To limit the spread of these invasive plants, they must be continuously removed by uprooting—this was the goal of that day.

The last day was dedicated to a hike in the Parnidis Landscape Reserve with the expert and biologist Žygimantas Valiuška. The naturalist introduced the participants to the local plant life and explained how the shifting dunes have changed over time.

Outcomes of the event
- Fourteen participants took part in a three-day nature restoration camp. During the camp, participants had the opportunity to attend educational lectures about the Baltic Sea and its marine life. The lectures were delivered by Nerijus Nika, Head of the Marine Research Institute, and Pavel Kulikov, a zoologist at the Baltic Sea Animal Rehabilitation Center.

- The camp also included an educational and exploratory hike, where participants became familiar with the habitats of the Curonian Spit National Park. They learned the names and roles of the most common plants within these habitats. During the hike, the park's biologist, Žygimantas Valiuška, introduced participants to invasive plant species spreading in the park and demonstrated the damage they cause.

- Nature restoration work was also carried out during the camp, where participants removed and eradicated the invasive plant Sarothamnus scoparius. Through their efforts, the participants managed to restore a 3000 m² area, allowing a natural habitat vital for the growth of native species to recover.
