Beskrivning

CCB's member AplinkosVšĮ “Aplinkosaugos sprendimų centras” (Center for Environmental Solutions) organised a webinar with an organic farmer from Romania George Cățean.

Farmer George Cățean talked about the work of the Cățean family farm and organic farming in the EU and Romania. The meeting took place on December 5 at 17:00 CET on Zoom in English.

The Cățean Farm is a family business that continues the uninterrupted activity of several generations, carrying forward the local tradition in the mountain area: animal breeding and the production of traditional cheeses. This contributes to preserving the area's cultural and gastronomic identity, as a sign of their respect and commitment to the local tradition.
The farm owns 1500 sheep, 100 dairy cows, 120 hectares of crops and 180 hectares of pastures. Since 2017 the farm has started to switch to organic farming, the target being that by 2030 the farm will be 100% certified organic.

The farm also has an educational component for students from city schools. In 2023, the farm was visited by over 7,000 children who received information about organic farming, the European Union, and cheese making.

In 2021, together with 7 other neighbouring farmers, an agricultural cooperative specializing in raising dairy animals (sheep and cow) was established.

In 2022, the cooperative benefited from funding from the Government to create a milk collection centre and a logistics centre for collecting berries.

In 2024, the cooperative submitted two projects for funding from the European Union: 2.7 million euros for a new dairy sheep farm and 1.3 million euros for tractors, machinery and equipment for sustainable agriculture.
