The Chemical Tanker Project seeks to identify the most harmful and hazardous chemical discharges into the Baltic Sea resulting from the tank washing of chemical tankers at Finnish and Swedish ports. It also seeks to find solutions to reduce permissible discharges.
OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT
Wenn ein Tanker, der flüssige Massengüter – also Chemikalien – transportiert, seine Tanks wäscht, können dabei auf einmal Hunderte Liter schädlicher und gefährlicher Chemikalien ins Meer gelangen. Nach dem Entladen ihrer Ladung waschen Chemikalientanker ihre Tanks auf dem Weg zum nächsten Ladehafen häufig mit Seewasser. Nach internationaler Gesetzgebung darf Waschwasser mit Chemikalien innerhalb bestimmter Grenzen ins Meer eingeleitet werden. Das Schiff muss mindestens 12 Seemeilen (ca. 22 km) vom nächstgelegenen Land entfernt sein und die Meerestiefe muss mindestens 25 m betragen.

The Chemical Tanker Project seeks to identify the most harmful and hazardous chemical discharges into the Baltic Sea resulting from the tank washing of chemical tankers at Finnish and Swedish ports. It also seeks to find solutions to reduce permissible discharges. The chemical load caused by tank washing can be reduced by means such as developing tank emptying and washing methods as well as the treatment of washing water. The most effective solutions may vary for different chemicals – for this reason, the companies using these chemicals play a key role in finding the best solutions. Municipalities, entrepreneurs and residents are not making the right decisions because they lack awareness about both the problem and potential solutions.

Welche Auswirkungen sind zu erwarten?
Selbst legale Einleitungen von Waschwasser aus Chemikalientankern können der Meeresumwelt erheblichen Schaden zufügen. Durch die Behandlung des mit schädlichen Chemikalien belasteten Waschwassers an Land können die Einleitungen schädlicher Substanzen reduziert werden.
