What is HELCOM?
The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission – also known as the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) – is an intergovernmental organization (IGO) and a regional sea convention in the Baltic Sea area. HELCOM was established about four decades ago to protect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea from all sources of pollution through intergovernmental cooperation. Referring to the Outcome of PRESSURE 8-2018 (para. 3.29) the Workshop on implementation of the Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter (WS RAP ML 3-2018) was held in Riga, Latvia, on 9 October 2018. The Workshop was held back to back with the Ninth Meeting of the HELCOM Working Group on Reduction of Pressures from the Baltic Sea Catchment Area (PRESSURE 9-2018) held on 10-12 October.
