ASCOBANS - 10th Meeting of the Parties
What is ASCOBANS? ASCOBANS was concluded in 1991 as the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas (ASCOBANS) under the auspices of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS or Bonn Convention) and entered into force in 1994. To know more about it.

Beschreibung

The 10th Meeting of the Parties to the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans in the Baltic, North East Atlantic, Irish and North Seas (ASCOBANS) took place from 10 to 12 September 2024 in Odense, Denmark.

Many pressures threaten species the world over, in every ocean. By addressing such threats, actions agreed by ASCOBANS Parties at the meeting could not only reduce their impacts on species in the ASCOBANS area but also help raise awareness and contribute to a global response needed to tackle these pressing issues affecting all life in our oceans.

CCB participant in the meeting:
- Andrea Cervantes, CCB’s Biodiversity Officer

Outcomes of the meeting
- Along with discussions surrounding strategic and institutional subjects, ASCOBANS Parties considered resolutions on current conservation challenges. These include beaked whales, maritime spatial planning, and disturbance from recreational speed craft.

- CCB's Biodiversity Officer collected information on countries' progress on the Actions of the Jastarnia Plan as well as relevant knowledge on recent scientific studies and upcoming projects.

- CCB brought questions to some countries regarding methods of avoidance and mitigation of impacts as well as progress on the implementation of actions for the protection of the Baltic Harbour porpoise.
